“ Borrowing from the imagined surface of some distant alien planet, Sustenance creates an imagined geological form. The suggestion of life in its crystalization on the surface makes one ponder: Is this alive? Was this ever alive? The weathered surface shows the passage of time, giving more explicit references to a narrative of an alien planet changing and evolving.
When creating Sustenance, I took inspiration from cinematic depictions of galactic life. The way these depictions of alien ecosystems mimic those in our reality, just ever-so-slightly deformed, was something I found to be conceptually interesting for my work. The way the biology of this form is elusive to us parallels the way our own biology becomes misconstrued and elusive, a term I call ‘biological mysticism’ ”.
